Mokume Gane necklace in sterling silver, shibuichi and copper by me:o)

Mokume gane is an old Japanese technique for creating mixed-metal woodgrain patterns. Thanks to Hadar Jacobson, I have learned to make such patterns from metal clay. I just had to try making my own metal clays of traditional Japanese alloys to incorporate in this work and have now successfully made both shibuichi and shakudo clays by mixing commercially available clays in gold, silver and copper. I am really happy with the result, but it took forever to get it right… I can’t really afford metal clays at the moment so this technique will be an occasional treat to myself.

Metal clay prices have now dropped a bit so don’t give up it’s getting better! This beautiful example of Mokume Gane created from metal clay should get your creative juices flowing!

This is pretty much my favorite of the necklaces I’ve made. I really had fun with it.

What a hectic week! We had a full studio last Saturday as part of our popular Open Studio Fortnights and we had lots of busy people making many wonderful creations. This week has been heads down preparing for a jewellery workshop at Queens Park Art Centre this coming Sunday based on Natural Forms. This pendant was created by applying silver clay paste to a cotton pod and finishing off with some Kurecolor Inks.

Layer your glass sandwich

Fire in a kiln or use our microwave kiln

Once fired simply hang from your design

Why not add a silver clay frame

Dry and refine the frame before firing

Polish the frame once fired

Hang on your chosen chain

Hang from a commercial bail

Make glass cabochons with dichroic inserts. We used Bullseye COE90 glass for the project. You will need a kiln to fire these or one of our microwave kilns which can be placed inside your microwave to fully fuse glass pieces.

Cut some clear glass using a glass cutter and layer in the dichroic “noodles” over the base of piece of clear glass. Make sure you layout your design on some ceramic fibre paper to prevent sticking to your kiln shelf. Add another piece of clear glass on the top to create a “glass sandwich”. To stop the inserts moving around hold them together using some glass fusing glue or watered down PVA. To create a more rounded effect on the fused piece make sure you make the top layer of glass bigger than the base piece so this melts around the whole piece and round the edges of the glass piece. We even changed the shape of some our fused glass using a Taurus Ring Saw and then re-fired to give a fire polish.

Once fully fused these glass cabochons are ready to add ready made jewelry fittings. Alternatively why not add a silver clay frame, leave a little room around the glass to allow for shrinkage and then re-fire at 1100degF(593degC) for 30 minutes
